Paper for writing lab/English
Picture a boy who just finished high school at age 18. He goes out with his friends and celebrates at the local pool. He confuses the deep end and the shallow end and dives in, head first right into the pool. He breaks his neck and becomes a quadriplegic. When he is 19 he has his first urinary tract infection because of an indwelling urinary catheter and continues suffering for the rest of his life. At the age of 20 he came down with herpes zoster of the trigeminal nerve and he suffers from chronic unbearable pain. In the next year he inherits a ten million-dollar trust fund. He never gets married nor has any kids. At age 40 he hears about Dolly being cloned, so he changes his will and gets his DNA stored for human cloning. His future mother will be awarded one million dollars to have and raise the cloned him. His DNA clone will inherit a trust fund, and he leaves five million to spinal cord research. He later dies feeling that although he was robbed of a normal life, his twin or genetic clone will lead a better one. Not many people have thought about that (Cloning). Although there are many people who think that human cloning is morally wrong and should not be practiced anywhere, there are many major health benefits from cloning (Cloning).
There are different groups that are opposed to human cloning; these groups include politicians and religious groups. The President of the United States is strongly opposed and is showing it by trying to outlaw it. The President formed a plan made of two steps. The first was to call for a moratorium on the Federal Funds for human cloning research. Next, he asked the National Bio-ethics Advisory Commission to make a recommendation whether or not that new technology should be more tightly controlled. Pro-life groups have begun attacking the commission’s conclusion before it was given because they feel that creating human embryos in the lab and destroying them in the lab is killing. The commission, who had turned in the report late, recommended that no one, no matter who pays for it, or for what reason, may clone a human. The White House, in an effort to stop human cloning quickly, expected to make the recommendation a law and hoped to enforce it (Gorman 66). Nigel Cameron, the Head of Center or Bioethics and Human Dignity at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois stated ” It’s only a matter of time and money before someone does it to a human. But part of our notion of dignity is that we are different. Cloning humans diminishes the dignity of all of us”(Carlin 113-114). However, he does say this without mentioning anything about the benefits of human cloning.
Scientists believe there could be many positive medical benefits form human cloning. Scientists knows for a fact that when a normal embryo cell is mixed with cancerous cells from a type of tumor that arises from embryos, the mixture forms into what scientists call a “mosaic cell”. The mosaic cell develops normally, and the tumor cells even become a part of the testes and the ovaries. What is astonishing is that the second generation found that the genes from the cancerous cells had been passed on but did not give the subject cancer. The cancer cells reverted back to normal. Also what could be called a disgusting breakthrough or an outstanding breakthrough is that in 1977 Karl Imensee and Peter Hoppe had created five mice without fathers and two mice without mothers. Clement Markert of Yale had tried to make mice with two fathers and mice with two mothers, but they failed (Kolata 126-127). Scientists could also make an exact replica of a baby that was lost because of a terrible death like a fire or a car crash and the parents were injured and could no longer have children. Or say that a woman had gone through some medical emergency ending up having a hysterectomy before getting married or have any children. That woman, who had been stripped of her ability to have children, needs a surrogate mother to have a child of her own DNA, which can be donated by human cloning or by in vitro fertilization. In addition to that, scientists, within five year will be able to culture different types of tissues and test new drugs and antidotes. Research for cells have been obtained from aborted fetuses or from discarded embryos created in the lab for infertile couples. But that has antiabortion activists going crazy saying that embryo research is morally wrong (Cloning).
Some of the best benefits of human cloning will be able to save many lives, make limbs, and cure some incurable diseases. The new technology can take cells from the good section from your heart and inject them into the bad part to reverse heart attacks. There was a breakthrough in the research of human stem cells, embryonic stem cells can be grown to make organs or tissues to repair or even replace damaged ones. By combing the technology with human cloning technology it is possible to produce skin for the burned, or brain cells for those who suffer from being brain damaged, or spinal cords for the quadriplegics and paraplegics. It could also make hearts, lungs, kidneys, livers, or even to produce needed tissues for suffering people that will be free of rejection from their own immune system. The diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease along with diabetes, heart failure and joint problems could be curable if the cloning technology is not banned. To help the risk of babies getting Tay-Sach’s Disease, doctors could look at the DNA and prevent it from developing. Liver failures, technology may allow livers to be cloned and used for transplants. With cancer the technology may learn how to switch the cells from on and off through cloning. For spinal cord injuries it may teach scientist to grow nerves or the spinal cord back again when people are injured (Cloning).
In conclusion, the reason human cloning should not be banned is because it can provide many health benefits to people, like finding cures for cancer, preventing heart attacks, regenerating limbs and organs for accident victims and people with birth defects. Other reasons human cloning should be allowed are because of the benefits of letting infertile women have children and to reduce the risk of babies getting many different diseases. All of the positive health benefits of human cloning outweigh the moral reasons and fears that religious and political groups have against it.
